Alaska lies at the extreme northwest of the North American continent, and the Alaska Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the Western Hemisphere. Because the 180th meridian passes through the state’s Aleutian Islands, Alaska’s westernmost portion is in the Eastern Hemisphere. Thus, technically, Alaska is in both hemispheres.
Alaska is bounded by the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic Ocean to the north; Canada’s Yukon territory and British Columbia province to the east; the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south; the Bering Strait and the Bering Sea to the west; and the Chukchi Sea to the northwest. The capital is Juneau, which lies in the southeast, in the panhandle region. |

Alaska: Seward – Dog sledding during the summer season
After spending the previous day at sea we decided to focus our last few days in Steward on terra firma. Since arriving in Alaska and Emily finding out about the existence of kennels for dog sledding huskies that were open to the public, we had been pressurized into visiting one of these establishments. Luckily enough one such place existed close to Seward. Despite this being summer and the snow being long gone this tour also promised us a sled ride – how could we turn down this opportunity
Alaska: Kenai Peninsula – Exit Glacier
Getting close-up and personal with a enormous river of ice. Whilst we still can!
Alaska: Exploring the Seward Highway
Exploring Alaska's Kenai Peninsula: incredible wildlife and the disappearing glaciers
Alaska: A day cruise to see Northwestern Fjord – whales, sea otters and retreating glaciers
The plan was to take a 9 ½ boat trip from Seward up the Northwestern Fjord, some 70 odd miles down the coast. The overcast weather put some doubt in our mind on this endeavor, but we had already bought the tickets, so were committed to the trip.
Alaska: Anchorage – Alaska Native Heritage Center
On our arrival in Anchorage our hopes were raised by some warm summer sun, but when we awoke on morning of our second day the weather has changed for the worst, it was both cold and damp. Mind you we never expected this to be a beach type holiday. We had come to Alaska prepared, so we layered up and set off to the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage.
