Denmark: Sjælland – SleepIn FÆNGSLET (Lodging review)

I had booked us into a place called FÆNGSLET which simply means PRISON in Danish. It is a sleepover place inside the former Horsens Prison, Horsens statsfengsel. One of the prison blocks had been turned into accommodation where you can stay over inside the grounds of the prison.

When we arrived, Karen went in to find out where were staying. On her return, we drove in through the prison entrance to the FÆNGSLET sleepover block. It was a large, three-floor building with about 30 rooms on each floor. Our room was on the end of the top floor. It was a good-sized room with a double bed – it was a prison cell, but the Danish are a kindly people so the cells were not too bad, although we were sure in the space we were in at least four people would have been incarcerated. There was no ensuite, so we had to use the disabled bathroom across the way. Fortunately, there was only about five other groups sharing the whole of the cell block and they were away from where we were sleeping so we had this bathroom to ourselves.

The kitchen was down below our room, and when we went down there were some families with young children preparing dinner. I am glad that we are not the only parent who think bringing their children to prison for a sleepover could be fun. Karen got chatting with a young Danish mother called Louise, and it seemed to be likely to go on for a while (which it did – they covered every subject under the sun) so I left them to it.
