The Thousand Islands Region is right at the tippy-top of New York State.  Here the St Lawrence River flows out of Lake Ontario towards the frigid waters of the North Atlantic. The border of the United State and Canada runs through Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River.

We wanted to spend a couple of days touring the area and we decided to base ourselves out of the small town of Clayton, New York, which lies on the shore of the St Lawrence River.

Clayton is a small town but it is quite lovely. The historical distric has several bars and restaurants to suite all budgets and tastes. Also, there a number of small boutique shops catering to the many tourists who frequent the area in the spring, summer and autumn. 

The waterfront at clayton is a great place to walk or just sit and enjoy the St Lawrenece River and catch a sunset.

There is also small, working harbour with a busy boatyard. He you will also find the Antique Wooden Boat Museum which has, as the name suggests, a wonderful collection of antique wooden boats. The quality of the craftsmenship will amaze you.

The Wooden Boat is located in the historical district of Clayton. It is small, with a handful of rooms and a cottage that can be rented. I would say the rooms are snug and cosy (codified for tiny) but they are great for a stay for a few days. The rooms are ensuite – but the bathroom is definitely small (at least the one we had) and it is only one person at a time. 

There is no breakfast served but there is a shared kitchen which is well equiped. Attached to the kitchen there is homely porch area with a microwave, a couple of bistro tables to enjoy breakfast and some comfy chairs to relax in. This all give the Inn a feel of a hostel – which we liked about it. 

Outside the porch is an outdoor seating area, with a picnic bench and a few Adirondack chairs. Best of all is the firepit, which makes this a great gathering place to meet fellow travellers.

Another of our discoveries was the Wood Boat Brewery which has a pub attached to it. If you are a beer drinker it is definitely worth checking out. We tried the sampler of several beers and they were all excellent.

The Wood Boat Brewery brew pub is about a 5-minute walk from the Wooden Boat Inn. This place gets busy during the summer months and when we were here in July you had to arrive early to make sure you got a seat.

New York: New York City – 9/11 Memorial & Museum
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum lay in the footprint of the twin towers of the World Trade Center that was attacked by terrorists deliberately flying aircraft into these buildings on September 11, 2001. Two additional aircraft were hijacked, one crashing into the Pentagon and the second brought down in a field by the brave efforts of the passengers on board. In total, nearly 3000 people lost their lives. The memorial and museum provide a place to contemplate and document what happened on that tragic day in 2001.
