Nestled amid the rugged hills of central Mexico, the UNESCO-listed city of Guanajuato captivates visitors with its labyrinthine alleys, vividly coloured colonial architecture, and a rich tapestry of cultural heritage that reflects its storied past as a silver mining powerhouse, all while offering a uniquely atmospheric charm that effortlessly intertwines historical grandeur with a vibrant contemporary arts scene.
Mexico: Guanajuato – Museo Iconográfico del Quijote
During our time in Guanajuato, we visited the Museo Iconográfico del Quijote, a museum entirely focused on the character of Don Quixote and the world created by Miguel de Cervantes. The museum is located in a calm part of the city centre, not far from the Teatro Juárez, and the entrance is easy to miss if you’re not specifically looking for it. Once inside, it becomes clear that the museum is quite specialised, but also well-organised and thoughtfully presented. It’s spread across several rooms and levels, and each space displays a wide range of artwork inspired by the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha. There are oil paintings, engravings, sculptures, drawings, and even some modern or abstract pieces, all exploring different scenes or interpretations of the characters. Most of the works focus on Don Quixote himself and his companion Sancho Panza, showing them in various moods and settings—from comic and absurd to serious and reflective.
The museum doesn’t feel crowded, either in layout or in terms of visitors, which made it easier to take our time and look at things without pressure. The labels and information panels are clear, with both Spanish and English text in most areas, offering enough background to understand the work without being too long or detailed. There’s also a small section dedicated to Cervantes himself, including a few documents and portraits that help place the novel in its historical context. Even if you haven’t read the book recently—or ever—you can still get something out of the experience, although it probably helps to have at least a general idea of the story. We found it interesting how differently artists from different countries and periods had interpreted the same themes, and how a single story could inspire so many creative responses. The museum is not particularly large, but there’s a lot packed in, and we spent well over an hour going through everything.
There’s also a quiet reading room and a small shop near the exit with books, prints, and souvenirs related to Cervantes and Don Quixote. Overall, the Museo Iconográfico del Quijote is not your typical museum, but that’s part of what makes it memorable. It offers a focused look at how literature can influence visual art, and how one fictional character can become a cultural icon across centuries and continents. It’s a good stop for anyone looking for something a bit different from the usual historical or regional museums, and it adds another layer to the experience of visiting Guanajuato, a city already full of stories and strong identities.

🥾 Walking
Guanajuato is a very walkable city, especially in the historic centre, which is mostly pedestrianised. Be prepared for:
Steep hills and lots of steps
Narrow alleyways (many are too tight for cars)
Uneven, cobbled streets – comfy shoes are a must
Walking is often the best way to explore, as many attractions are close together but not accessible by vehicle.
🚕 Taxis & Ubers
Taxis are available, but Uber is generally easier and cheaper.
Ubers are reliable and available in most parts of the city
You may need to walk to a main road or meeting point if you’re staying up a hill or down a narrow lane
Always double-check your pickup spot and be ready to walk a bit to meet your driver
🚌 Local Buses
There are local buses, but they’re more commonly used by residents than tourists. They run:
Along major roads and between neighbourhoods
Mainly above ground (although many main roads in the centre are underground tunnels!)
If you speak some Spanish and are up for a challenge, they can be very cheap, but not always the easiest option for first-time visitors.
🚠 Funicular
The funicular railway is a short but handy ride:
🚉 Goes up to El Pípila viewpoint (great for panoramic photos!)
🎟️ Tickets are affordable and it’s much easier than climbing dozens of stairs
A good option if you want to avoid a strenuous walk uphill.
🚗 Driving
Not recommended unless you’re very confident. Guanajuato:
Has many one-way streets, tight corners, and tunnel roads
Parking can be hard to find
Much of the old town is off-limits to cars
