The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is one of the most prominent cultural institutions in the Middle East, renowned for its impressive collection of Islamic art and its striking architecture.

The museum was designed by the acclaimed architect I. M. Pei, who is also known for his work on the Louvre Pyramid in Paris. The MIA’s design blends traditional Islamic elements with modern aesthetics. The building is constructed from limestone, and its contemporary design is bold geometric.

If the outside was beautiful, the inside was more incredible. There was a massive central atrium that allowed natural light to filter in through the grand glass windows, which completely filled one side of the museum building. Through these windows you get an amazing view of the Doha Financial district.

We started on the ground floor where there was a temporary exhibit of art from Morocco, including photos, tiles, carpets, textiles, pottery and music. We were instantly impressed.

The next three floors are where the permanent exhibits are displayed in several themed galleries that are set out in chronological order.

The museum has an extensive collection of artefacts that span over 1,400 years of Islamic history. Its collection includes over 14,000 objects that represent Islamic civilization across a wide geographical area, from Spain in the west to Central Asia in the east.

Key highlights of the collection include:

Islamic Calligraphy and Manuscripts: The museum features a rich collection of illuminated manuscripts and calligraphy, which are among the most celebrated forms of art in the Islamic world. These include early Qur’anic manuscripts, scientific texts, and poetry books, often beautifully decorated with intricate designs and calligraphic art.
Ceramics and Glass: The museum’s collection includes some of the finest examples of Islamic ceramics from different periods and regions, such as Persian, Turkish, and Chinese-influenced pottery. The glass collection features pieces from the early Islamic period as well as some of the more luxurious glassware produced during the medieval Islamic golden age.
Textiles: The museum showcases a rich collection of Islamic textiles, including silk, wool, and cotton fabrics that reflect the highly skilled craftsmanship of various Islamic societies. Some pieces date back to the early Islamic period and showcase elaborate patterns and colours.
Metalwork: Islamic metalwork includes intricately designed bronze, gold, and silver pieces, such as lamps, plates, and weapons, which highlight the advanced craftsmanship of Islamic artisans.
Jewellery and Artifacts: The museum features a large collection of jewellery, including delicate gold and silver pieces adorned with precious stones. It also includes a variety of other artifacts such as ivory carvings, wooden panels, and architectural fragments that provide insight into Islamic art and design across different regions and periods.
Architectural Models: The museum displays several models of iconic Islamic structures from across the Muslim world, including mosques, palaces, and other architectural masterpieces, giving visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of Islamic architecture.

There were so many beautiful art pieces on display that it was somewhat overwhelming. The presentation of the collection was outstanding, and the explanations were in both Arabic and English. Although we were short on time, we covered all the galleries in a couple of hours. You could have of course spent much longer wandering through the museum.

By the time our visit was coming to a close, the sun was beginning to set. Through the large glass floor-to-ceiling windows of the central atrium you could see the lights of the Doha Financial District start to come on.

We decided to head to the outside of the MIA, where there was a large, cloistered courtyard which met the waterfront on one side and had magnificent views of the city.

Here, we sat and watched the day slip away.
