A reading list of travel themed books

If you like reading books with a travel theme here is my list of recommendations

As a regular traveller, I find plenty of downtime to fill, especially as we move from place to place. This is a great time to catch up with my reading (or blogging).

Reading books about travel may seem, as we say in the UK like taking a ‘Busman’s holiday’, but I enjoy reading about travel. For one it is a source of ideas and in other cases, I can relive previous travel adventures. Some of the books give hints and tips for people thinking about travelling for the first time or going on an extended trip – either alone or as a family.

Below are listed some books I have read and enjoyed covering adventures all around the world – hopefully if you have a similar interest in these stories, you might be inspired to check some of these out for yourself.

1. WE CAME, WE SAW, WE LEFT: A FAMILY GAP YEAR – CHARLES WHEELAN

What would happen if you quit your life for a year? In a pre–COVID-19 world, the Wheelan family decided to find out; leaving behind work, school, and even the family dogs to travel the world on a modest budget.

2. TRAVEL AS A POLITICAL ACT – RICK STEVES

Travel as political act - Rick Steves

I have been watching Rick Steves’ travel shows on Public Television for several years. He comes across as a jovial chap and his shows are informative in a light and fluffy way. So, I was somewhat shocked when I recently caught one of his programmes entitled “Travel as a Political Act”

3. TRAVELING THE WORLD ON $50 A DAY – MATT KEPNES

Matt Kepnes book “How to Travel the World on $50 a day is a best seller. It details how to travel cheaper, longer, and smarter. It is a valuable guide for the budding world traveller with a tight budget.

4. A WORLD WORTH SEEING – BRIAN NELSON

Judging by the content of this book, Brian Nelson is a well-travelled man and has visited just about every country, even some that a lot of people would avoid; Syria (he did this before the war), North Korea and Afghanistan.
