Finland: Helsinki – A visitor’s guide

Helsinki lies in the far south of the country, on a peninsula that is fringed by fine natural harbours and that protrudes into the Gulf of Finland. It is an easily accessible city full of history and all the modern trimmings you expect in a major Scandinavian city.

Finland: Helsinki – Löyly sauna

Sauna culture in Finland is an integral part of the lives of the majority of the Finnish population. After doing some research I discovered a famous Helsinki sauna called Löyly, so we went there to check what this Finnish sauna thing was all about.

Finland: Helsinki – Sibelius Monument

I wanted to check out while we were in Helsinki, the Sibelius Monument. Jean Sibelius, formerly Johan Sibelius was born in 1865 and died in 1957 is Finland’s most famous composer and probably one of the country’s greatest citizens.

Finland: Suomenlinna or Sveaborg

Suomenlinna or Sveaborg is a sea fortress, which was built gradually from 1748 onwards on a group of eight islands belonging to the district of Helsinki. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and also a suburb of Helsinki with around 800 residents.
